Centennial Square

Info: Centennial Square was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony in August, 2006, as part of the City of Alma Centennial Celebration. Nearly 800 engraved bricks, with names of Alma-Bacon County residents, clubs, churches, businesses and other organizations — past and present — are included in the square in Goldwasser Park. An official centennial time capsule is buried under the marble center stone and plans call for it to be opened at the city’s bicentennial celebration. The public can view the Centennial Square at anytime.

Info: Blueberries have become the area's point of pride, kicked off each year by the annual Georgia Blueberry Festival. Bacon County residents and visitors enjoy baseball, tennis and golf tournaments, a theater production, arts and crafts, a 5K run/walk, sidewalk chalk contest, pie-eating contest and a blueberry recipe competition in celebration of this locally cultivated, colorful fruit. Memorial Wall
Cut from black granite, the “Memorial Wall” contains the names of over 1100 veterans from Alma/Bacon County, who have served during WWI, WWII, Korea , Vietnam , Persian Gulf and Peacetime. In the background is an exciting display of a Vietnam-era helicopter. This wall can be viewed at anytime in Goldwasser Park in downtown Alma .

Blind Willie McTell Trail
The McTell Trail is a quaint, one-mile pathway connecting downtown
Statesboro to the campus of Georgia Southern University. The trail begins at
Fair Road's Memorial Park and ends at Triangle Park in the heart of
beautiful Downtown Statesboro. The trail consists of 7,415 square yards of
architecturally designed asphalt, six varieties of trees, custom-designed
benches by the university's art students, cobra lighting throughout and
more. Bike racks, picnic tables, trash receptacles, landscaped islands,
raised pedestrian crosswalks and much more! The McTell Trail allows visitors
and locals alike to walk and picnic during their lunch hour or perhaps to

Mill Creek Regional Park is a state-of-the-art park that not only includes a water park but premier baseball, softball, soccer and family recreation facilities that are unmatched in the Southeast. Overall, the Park is complemented by the picturesque lake surrounded by a well-lit and paved walking path. The park and its trails are beautifully landscaped with over
300 hardwood trees. The U.S. National Tick Collection (USNTC)
The U.S. National Tick Collection (USNTC) is the largest tick collection in the world with more than a million specimens including representatives of most of the world's c. 850 species. The collection remains the property of the Smithsonian Institution. The collection is a national treasure that allows tick identifications and related research to be carried out on a worldwide basis. This vital function allows ticks that are medically important or that parasitize livestock or pets (including those that transmit pathogens such as the agents that cause Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever) to be distinguished from species having less economic importance. Oak Grove One-Room School House
Originally located in Tattnall County, Georgia, the Oak Grove School istypical of the many one-room schools that served most of Georgia's ruralstudents from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Today, few of these buildings survive. As early as 1916, the University, then called the First District A&M School, offered teacher preparation courses to its students, thus establishing a nearly century long tradition of teacher education. Most of the graduates of Georgia Normal School and Georgia Teachers College would work in one-room schools across rural Georgia. WWII Flight Training Museum

Information: The Raymond-Richardson Flight Training School, formerly the
home of the 63rd Flight Training Detachment, in Douglas, GA is the most
intact, complete and original school of its kind left in the United States.
One of the 13 original buildings still standing has been turned into a
museum, complete with an archive room and original artifacts from the
school. The World War II Flight Training Museum interprets the untold story
of thousands of men and women who volunteered to learn to fly and fight in
the world's greatest airborne conflict.
